How to Create a Valid llms.txt File for Webflow SEO Settings
Getting your Webflow site ready for search engines and AI tools? Webflow recently introduced support for uploading an llms.txt
file that helps systems better understand your site.
While this feature might not deliver huge benefits just yet, it's a good idea to implement it now and future-proof your website for what's ahead.
In this quick guide, we’ll show you how to create your own llms.txt
file, make sure it's properly formatted and encoded, and upload it to Webflow. If you'd rather we handle it for you, just contact us! We’re happy to help.
What Is an llms.txt
File?
Think of it like a cheat sheet for your website. Like a robots.txt or sitemap.xml, it's a plain text file that outlines your key pages, sections, and links in a structured way. This helps AI and future SEO tools better understand your site's structure and purpose.
How to Create a Valid llms.txt
File
Step 1. Write Your llms.txt
File
In your preferred text editor, write out your structured content using a simple, consistent format. Stick to basic markdown styling:
- Use
#
and##
for section headings - Use
-
for bullet points - Use
[Link title](URL):
for links with optional descriptions
Here’s a sample structure you can copy and customize:
# Title
> Optional description goes here
Optional details go here
## Section Name
- [Link title](https://link_url): Optional link details
## Optional
- [Another link](https://example.com)

Step 2. Download the File
When saving your file, it must meet a few requirements:
- Format it as a plain
.txt
file - Make sure it’s encoded in UTF-8
- Keep the file size under 100 KB (this is easy unless you’re listing hundreds of pages)
The easiest way to get this right is to use Notepad on Windows:
- Write your text
- Go to File → Save As…
- Select UTF-8 encoding at the bottom
- Save the file as
llms.txt
Step 3. Upload to Webflow
Once your file is ready:
- Open your Webflow project
- Go to Site Settings → SEO
- Scroll down to the llms.txt upload section
- Upload your UTF-8
.txt
file - Click Save changes
That’s it! You’re all set!
Why It Matters
Even if llms.txt
isn’t a major SEO ranking factor today, structured content is the future. Search engines and AI systems are rapidly evolving, and clear site metadata can give your content a head start.
Plus, this kind of structured formatting can help internal tools, plugins, and future Webflow features better interpret and interact with your site.
